![]() By Kimberly Trujillo Staff Writer Hubbard’s Chess Team came victorious in their first match of the season. With Jerry as their coach, Jovany Rivas, Luis Rosaslanda, Jocelyn Martinez, David Hui, Jose Domicc, and Eduardo Mercado were motivated to win. Luis Rosaslanda, a senior, won the first match of the tournament. Jocelyn Martinez, a senior who happens to be the only girl competing in the tournament, won her match. “Practice makes better” and “Don’t be afraid to try,” are two of many phrases Coach Jerry uses to encourage the students to achieve the goal of winning. The team has been very determined, holding practices every Monday through Friday from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. They have competed against schools such as Kelly High School, Marine Science and Math Academy, and soon Whitney Young High School. So far the chess team has had two tournaments won and one lost. Jerry encourages other students that may be interested in joining chess but is afraid that they feel like they don’t have what it takes or think it’s only for people who are “intelligent.” He says you don’t have to be in an honors class nor in an A.P. class to join, you just need to have a head for strategy.
